Transfer (F1)
NMU is a transfer-friendly institution and courses transfer from accredited colleges and universities all over the world. Anyone who has attempted any college coursework after high school graduation a transfer student for admission purposes.
Exchange Students (J-1)
All exchange semesters begin with an official nomination from an international officer at your home university. Once your nomination has been accepted by NMU and you have received permission from your home university, you are ready to apply.
All documents must be submitted by your home university's international office. NMU will not accept documents directly from a student.

While part of what makes NMU unique is our incredible location, we are so much more than a pretty place. From our classrooms that span beyond the traditional lecture hall, to the numerous activities to do both on- and off-campus, we offer something for everyone.
International Application Deadlines
NMU accepts applications all year round whenever they are sent. However, we recommend the following deadlines. Please be aware that it can take a long time for some parts of the application to be completed. Make sure that you have time to send all of your application documents, receive your immigration documents (I-20) in the mail, apply for your visa, and prepare your travel arrangements.

Northern Michigan University’s physical campus is made up for more than 50 buildings and facilities. It is located just minutes from the shore of Lake Superior and downtown Marquette, Michigan.

Marquette County boasts a paved multi-use path through town and along the lakeshore. Take your bike out, but remember to wear a helmet. Consider going all the way to Presque Isle Park, where you can see huge iron ore ships in the harbor.

The campus was named one of the “most unwired” (wireless) campuses in the United States in 2005. LTE is the next generation (4G) of wireless and has a much broader access than the WiFi signal, meaning you can connect to the NMU network from more places off-campus than ever before. The campus is also completely wired.

Take a long walk through Downtown to Lower Harbor. There might even be a concert, an art show, or a food festival. If the park is empty, you can invite some friends to kick a soccer ball around or play other games in the open field. Relax on the benches and enjoy the sun while watching sailboats glide through the harbor.

The "academic mall" at NMU consists of the Learning Resources Center and Olson Library, Jamrich Hall, the Seaborg Science Complex and the Hedgcock Student Service Center, which houses the Reynolds Recital Hall.
The arts plaza includes Forest Roberts Theatre, Thomas Fine Arts, McClintock, and the Art and Design Building that includes the DeVos Art Museum.
The other main academic facilities are Whitman Hall, Gries Hall, Cohodas Hall, and the Jacobetti Complex.

In late August and early September, there might still be some hot days suited to jumping in the lake. Play volleyball or Frisbee on the beach with some friends. If you are not a swimmer, you will enjoy walking along the shore or having a picnic.

One aspect of the NMU campus students say they enjoy most is that everything is within easy walking distance.

If you want to see a panorama of Marquette, climb up Sugar Loaf Mountain or Mount Marquette. You can also get a Marquette waterfall map and hike along some of the rivers until you find the falls. The easiest set of waterfalls to find is Dead River Falls, about 10 minutes outside of town.

There are ten residence halls, as well as several on-campus apartment buildings. There are also several high-tech specialty computer labs, a speech-language and hearing clinic, two art galleries, two on-campus radio stations, a public TV station, a university center with a bookstore, as well as one of the premier sports complexes in the Midwest, which includes the Superior Dome – the largest wooden dome in the world.
