MU 290 Body Mapping for Musicians 1 cr.

Inaccurate mental concepts (body maps) limit musical technique and expressiveness,  increasing the likelihood of long-term injury. Students combine anatomical study with personal movement exploration to improve the quality and expressiveness of movements for practicing and performing.

Chronological study of music literature, and its development in Western civilization from ancient music through the Renaissance period.

Chronological study of music literature and its development in Western civilization from the Baroque and Classical eras.

Chronological study of music literature and its development in Western civilization from the Romantic Era through present day.

MU 304 Form and Analysis 2 cr.

  • Prerequisites: A grade of "C" or better in MU 204 and MU 301.

Examination of the components of musical structural design. Basic elements of homophonic and contrapuntal forms are studied via formal musical analysis. Emphasis is placed on the study of forms of the Middle Ages through the 20th century.

MU 320 Survey of Jazz, from its Origins to the Present 4 cr.

  • Prerequisites: EN 211 with a grade of "C" or better and sophomore standing.

This course explores jazz from its origins at the turn of the century to its present forms. Emphasis will be on the music itself, with some consideration of the socio-cultural situations that act as catalysts to the music’s various stylistic features.

A survey of non-Western music from a representative music culture (or cultures) emphasizing music’s place in a culture, its historical development, and analysis and interpretation of forms of aesthetic expression.

MU 345A Marching Band Practicum 1 cr.
  • Offered: Fall, Even Years
  • Prerequisites: MU 114.

Skills and resources for effectively administering a marching band. Includes  drill writing, marching styles, uniforms, instrument care, music selection, auxiliary percussion and flags. Students may serve as assistant drill instructors with the NMU marching band.

MU 345B Symphonic Band Practicum 1 cr.

Skills and resources for effectively administering the symphonic band. Includes literature, methods of instruction and procedures.

MU 349 Methods and Materials in Music Education/Elementary 2 cr.
  • Offered: Fall
  • Prerequisites: For Music Education Majors. MU 201 and MU 202 or instructor's permission.

An explaration of contemporary music education in grades P-6. The course  covers performance objectives, philosophical and musical concepts, instructional methods and materials, and techniques used in the general music class. Each student observes and participates in general music classes in area schools on a limited basis.

MU 350 Methods and Materials in Music Education/Secondary 2 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Admission to the methods phase of teacher education and all core courses: MU 101-MU 210.

A study of contemporary music education in secondary schools (grades 7-12). The course covers both teaching and administrative procedures. Students are exposed to various philosophies of vocal and instrumental music education. Technical problems such as the changing voice and general music classes are discussed.

MU 351 Performance 3 - Percussion 1 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Passing 300-level proficiency exam.

One individual lesson per week. Continuation of MU 251 with emphasis upon mallet keyboard and multiple percussion. Care and maintenance of percussion are applied. Composition and improvisation are encouraged.

MU 361 Performance 3 - Strings 1 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Passing 300-level proficiency exam.

One individual lesson per week in violin, viola, cello, or string bass. Continuation of MU 261 focusing on advanced bowing strokes and pacing related to phrasing in preparation for senior recital or senior project.

MU 490 Senior Recital 1 cr.
  • Offered: Fall Winter
  • Prerequisites: Promotion to the 300 level, junior standing or instructor's permission. Completion of all proficiency exams.
A required public recital (full or partial) or its equivalent prepared with the approval and assistance of a faculty member. Works programmed must meet the standard of the department (Performance Level III) and be performed with satisfactory style and skill.
MU 491 Senior Project 1 cr.
  • Offered: Fall Winter
  • Prerequisites: MU 203, MU 204, MU 206 and MU 210. Junior standing or instructor's permission. Promotion to 300 level required for those seeking a performance project. Completion of all proficiency exams.
Senior Project may be a composition, paper or performance. A project proposal must be approved by the supervising teacher and department head. A pre-presentation review must be approved by area faculty two weeks before final presentation.
MU 492 Internships in Music Entrepreneurship, Music Management and Marketing and Publicity 1-12 cr.  (3-0-36)

 A 14-week internship in the music industry intended as a capstone experience for the Bachelor of Music in Music with Elective Studies in Business or Emphasis in Music Technology. Internships may take place in the fields of music products retail and wholesale, arts management, marketing, promotions, recording, live sound, venue operations, sound design, and/or audio production. Students are encouraged to make contact with potential internship programs well before their internship semester.
