NMU Student Receives Griffiths Award

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Cara Crawford, a Northern Michigan University student from West Branch, is the recipient of the 2013 Martha Griffiths Award presented by the American Association of University Women-Marquette Branch.

Crawford will graduate May 4 with a degree in communication studies and a minor in chemistry. She is a member of the Pre-medical Club and Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medical Honor Society. Crawford has been involved in many service activities, including Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, CampSTAR Children's Bereavement Camp and the Students for the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center. She has gained acceptance to the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

The award is named after “one of Michigan’s most influential women legislators in the last half of the 20th century.” Griffiths was known for her efforts related to the Civil Rights Act and for getting the Equal Rights Amendment to the House floor for a vote in 1970.

 Crawford received a certificate and a check for $150.
